Question: What is the best way to select a photographer? Answer Selecting a wedding photographer is a very daunting task because your photos are what you will use to relive that magical day for years to come. If the photographer screws up or if you do not convey you're vision for your photos, you and your husband will be out of luck since you can never get that day back. Here are some steps for working with you're photographer:

  • Decide on which photographic style you would like your photographer to use. You may want all posed shots for your album or all photojournalistic shots (or as I call them "caught in the moment" shots). Photojournalistic or candid shots catch your guests enjoying the the day and capture the emotion of the day. On the other hand, posed shots offer you're guests a warning that a photo is about to be taken. The downside of posed shots is that they take you and your guests away from the enjoyment of the event. However, photojournalistic shots can cause you to miss that photo with your grandmother or your all important sorority sisters. Most brides opt for a combination of both.
  • Create a "Must Take" list for your photographer. This helps to insure that no major shot is missed. You might also chose to print out various photos that you like to give your photographer a feel for your style.

  • Ask your photographer to see a portfolio of HIS or HER work. This is very important especially when working with a large photo studio with several photographers. You want to see the work of the photographer you will have on your wedding day. Ask for recent bride referrals who used your specific photographer to see if they were pleased with his service.
