Yom Kippur is a very important Jewish holiday. Jewish families often have their own traditions for celebrating the holiday, but here are a few food ideas for the celebration:
Delicacies prepared and eaten during Yom Kippur may include things like honey cakes, apple and sour cream cake, Gefilte fish patties, and mushroom dishes. Most of the food on the menu for Yom Kippur will be vegetarian in design only including meats from fish or lamb.
To create honey cake you will need 3 ½ cups sifted flour, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 ½ teaspoons allspice, ¾ cup sugar, 4 eggs, 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 2 cups of honey, ½ cup brewed coffee, ½ cup of almonds, ½ cup raisins, 1 ½ cups honey, 2 table spoons of lemon juice, ½ cup water, ½ teaspoon lemon zest, and 2 ounces of slivered almonds for topping.
You will need to heat the oven to 325 degrees. Combine the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and allspice together. Then beat the eggs gradually adding sugar, beat in the oil and then the honey and coffee. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture then add the almonds and raisins. Bake the mixture for 65 minutes. Drizzle honey, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water over the baked cake.
Yom Kippur allows for many different fried foods as well as many different desserts to be placed on the table for family and friends. Generally Yom Kippur is a potluck style celebration with everyone bringing a dish and having as much food as possible to share.
Whatever traditions your family and friends have for celebrating Yom Kippur, make sure that enjoying delicious food and spending time together is balanced by remembering the holiday’s significance.
